God Hears Us and Heals Us

Author, David Augsburger said, “Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person they are almost indistinguishable.”  As people, we have a very strong need to be listened to and understood.  We want what we say to matter to someone else.  We’ll pay well to talk to a counsellor or psychologist.  We pay for their professional advice, but we also pay to simply be heard.

We want to be heard by people, but people can be bad listeners, they can betray our confidence, they can offer bad advice, or they can simply be unable to help us.  God, however, is a perfect listener, and an all-powerful helper.

When we come to God in prayer, he understands what we have to say better than we do. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Rom 8:26)

Even a good human listener can only do so much to help us with our problems, but the power of God to act for our good has no limits.  “The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (Jam 5:16)

God begins to heal us even before we’ve finished telling him our troubles.  In the very process of giving our concerns to God, Paul says, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phi 4:7)

You don’t have to feel alone.  Tell your troubles to God.  His listening is perfect, the relief he offers is instant, and his ability to help is infinite. -Paul
