Christian Friends
In April of 2009, The Utne Reader reported that despite the technology created to connect us, Americans feel increasingly alone and lonely. We long for but largely lack authentic fellowship.
Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson said, “The fellowship of true friends who can hear you out, share your joys, help carry your burdens, and correctly counsel you is priceless.” These are very wise words. The value of friends can’t be measured. They are far more than a nicety. They’re a genuine and fundamental human need.
God knows we need each other. In Genesis 2:18 he said that it isn’t good for us to be alone. He created marriage to give us companionship. He also created a family that all people are welcomed into in the church.
God doesn’t want Christians to keep aloof from each other. He wants us to share the gift of mutual fellowship, and experience the joyful uplifting of friends who are fellow believers. That’s why he says through the writer of Hebrews, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Don’t live beneath your privilege. Don’t keep your Christian family at an arm’s length. Get to know your brothers and sisters in Christ. Share your joys and sorrows with them. Be built up by them. Develop fondness and affection for your fellow Christians. Experience comfort and friendship and get a glimpse of the fellowship waiting in heaven. -Paul
